Another Lebo Church Vandalized?

I noticed late this afternoon that the large sign outside Southminster Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Washington Road and Castle Shannon Boulevard, was heavily damaged in what appeared, to me, to be an act of vandalism. I'm hoping that I'm wrong. I looked at the Police Blotter but saw nothing that seemed relevant. Can anyone shed light on this?

Updated 7/7: I am wrong. Thanks, Marshall (in the comments), for the explanation.

  1. It was Sunday evening, a late winter night with but the slightest wet glaze from the briefest of cold fronts; a perfect, if improbable setup, given how temperate the day had been. The small sedan cruising into the uptown business district braked for the light at the Castle Shannon Blvd. intersection. In that instant, physics took over as friction took a holiday.

Every night since then the sign dutifully has projected its final message to the heavens, its comrades the yews, daffodils and other flora standing watch in the churchyard.

As far as may be discerned, the act was the work of man, and not of the divine, but bears no mark of sniggling, criminal hijinx or malicious intent. Plans for new signage are well underway.

  2. I walk by the church almost every day and have often wondered what is taking so long for the sign to be repaired. From the downed poles and the treadmarks, it was pretty obvious that it was a car crash.

I would have thought that either the car owner's insurance or the church's property insurance would have been able to pay for the damage very quickly.

  3. The sign's demise presented church leaders the opportunity to evaluate how a new bulletin board could function even more effectively than before, and to design and build for that, rather than to rebuild to the earlier design.

Accordingly, the congregation and community await patiently the new bulletin board's construction in the fullness of time.
