The aggravation of back-to-school has nothing on back-to-the-budget. Last Monday, Mt. Lebanon commissioners and administrators figuratively walked through the 136-page study they commissioned to California-based Matrix Consulting Group.
There were few surprises. Matrix already had released previous drafts, to which the municipality provided initial response. But the trick now is trying to incorporate such recommendations in a practical way. "The real hard work, as it relates to the implementation of the study, is just beginning," said Stephen Feller, municipal manager.

Why must I use my full name?

Just like at a public meeting of the school board or municipal government, when you stand to speak on Blog-Lebo, you must state your full name. OK – So the Mt. Lebanon Commission spends $65,000.00 on a consultant to tell them that if they reduce personnel and / or cut services the cost goes down. If this is how government works I have a few additional suggestions:
ReplyDeleteHire an astronomy consultant to determine when the sun will shine all the time just like it does where Sarah Palin lives. Think of the savings if the street lights never needed to be turned on!
Hire a global warming consultant to determine what can be done to hasten the day when it’s too warm to snow and we can strike salt out of the annual budget. Unfortunately, Congressperson Michelle Bachman doesn’t think this will ever happen.
Hire a mathematics consultant to calculate definitively if paying cash on the barrelhead for street and sidewalk repair will be a lesser total cost than borrowing for years with mostly interest payments. I can’t wait to get the answer on this one.
Sorry to be so factitious! Thank you, Steve Feller, for reporting that “A fair amount of our discussion was of what impact those changes would have”. Indeed – that is the real issue!
