Lebo: Multiple Hats Criticized
From today's Almanac, a long report of an encounter at the last School Board meeting between Joe Rodella, Board member, and Paula Bongiorno, unhappy resident. The P-G's earlier report was briefer.
The issue is whether Joe Rodella is violating the District's new ethics policy by serving as an officer of the Parents Athletic Council, which raises and distributes money to athletic organizations around Mt. Lebanon.
Joe R. apparently promised to ask the State Ethics Commission for input. I don't know the right outcome in his case. In the meantime, the situation raises an interesting general question: There are an awful lot of volunteer needs in this town, and a limited number of people willing to put in the time to help. So long as everyone involved is up front about their affiliations, should we have hard-and-fast rules that limit involvement in multiple organizations?

Volunteers are definitly needed, but Ms. Bonjornio may have stumbled on to something if two stated occurances at the latest televised board meeting were correct.
The first is that there definitely was NO prior public announcement of the pool plan discussion on the agenda! Ms. Walton admitted that, but COINCIDENTALLY, there were several members of the aqua club in attendence at this board meeting! From all the board meetings I've seen or attended, the aqua club doesn't normally have a presence at board meetings.
While this doesn't lead to an indictment of any individual, one should wonder what the interest or influence is in board decisions. Are there discussions or info being distributed that should be public? Perhaps, a board member didn't alert the club, but maybe an adminstrator, staffer or the designer - who's interest may be served by a new pool did. If so, why? Maybe the numbers/reasons presented for not keeping the current pool running my be erroneous or inflated to push this pool project ahead instead of waiting for the new H.S. project!?
Bonjourno never has anything positive to say about the school district, the school board, or the school administration. As you said, this community has desperate need for volunteers and Rodella is one of those busy, busy folks who tirelessly work for the good of Lebo.

Thanks for the comment Mrs. Rodella.
