Lebo: *Not* a Best Place to Live

Mt. Lebanon didn't even make Money's magazine's list of candidates for its "top places to live in the U.S." survey. But Bridgeville did. Ouch.

Wexford was the only Western PA town to be listed as a finalist.

According to the criteria, the reason Mt. Lebanon fell off the list is most likely our zip code.

The USPS officially categorizes 15228, 15243, and 15216 as Pittsburgh.

It probably didn't hurt that Bridgeville has 17 colleges, universities, or technical schools. Who knew?

This is a great point about the zip codes, because that is all that "Wexford" is, unless you live in Ireland. A lot of people don't realize it, but here "Wexford" (like Glenshaw, and some others) is merely a postal address: there is no place called Wexford. No town, no local government body. So "Wexford" can't really be one of the best places to live, because it isn't really a place.

I don't see why this is such a surprise. Mt. Lebanon is bourgeois and phony. So what if no one cares about your little suburb?

Some of the Commenters -- I'll call them the "reverse snobs" because of their disdain for Mt. Lebanon -- miss the point of the post.

The point, to be clear, was this:

There is a segment of the Mt. Lebanon population that is convinced that this is a uniquely "special" community. The reality is that while Mt. Lebanon is a nice town, there are many, many good places to live in this country. Mt. Lebanon isn't uniquely special; in fact, while it's a pleasant place to live, it isn't really "special" at all. The zip code business doesn't surprise me, but even without that data, the fact that Mt. Lebanon wasn't on the list didn't surprise me, either.
