Mt. Lebanon's deer population

The Trib has a story on plans to cull the deer population in Mt. Lebanon.

Anyone have any thoughts on a possible cull?

According to this article from Scientific American, the increased deer population is negatively affecting forest birds.

To me there is no question that the deer are problematic. Driving down 79 South to get to work, the roadway is littered with sprays of blood and carcasses. I've been in a deer collision myself and it's not pleasant.

What's worse, these deer are feeding on refuse and could be spreading disease. That makes the deer no better than vermin, so why get hung up on "cruelty?" We can't even educate our own children well about birth control; what makes us think we can manage deer with contraception? I say let 'em hunt.

When you have a large species competing for the same resources in a suburban area, something has to give. I had deer in my yard this spring (more than once even) and given how tiny my yard is, and how close we are to Cochran and Washington Roads, it was a real surprise.

My main concern about culling is that humans could get hurt. Otherwise, I like a good venison steak as much (if not more) than any other omnivore!

Here's a PG story about a State Farm study on deer/car collisions.
