Lebo: Is the Denis Going Down?

I heard a rumor over this past weekend that paperwork is in process to authorize the demolition of the Denis Theater. Is that true? If the Denis goes, will the other businesses on the corner (Potomac Bakery, for example) go too? Are there plans for a new building on the site?

Oh, I understand now...if you don't agree with the post, it gets deleted. But as I rack my brain to think why you deleted my post to the Aldo's story, the only thing I can come up with is that I called Laurie "liberal". One one hand, she refers to Fox News as "Faux News" but my referring to her comment as a liberal knee-jerk reaction is apparently too much.

Now that I know this is a left-leaning blog with no room for alternate opinions, I'll let others know as well.

The comment was deleted because it was an ad hominem personal attack on another commenter, rather than a comment on the merits of the post or of the comment itself. The post and the comment were about *Aldo's.* Comment all you like about Aldo's (say, for example, that you like the fact that the store sometimes has Fox News on the television, or say that the last comment has it wrong, because Aldo's doesn't play Fox News all the time, or because it's perfectly OK if Aldo's plays Fox News all the time). But no ripping the commenters simply for having a point of view, whether it's liberal or conservative or up or down or side to side. Don't swing by and post a comment just to assault someone else and wave your politics. Even when the blog wanders into politics -- and with an election coming up, it will -- it's going to remain a place for civil conversation. Please, by all means, let others know!

(By the way, if you really think that this is a "left-leaning blog with no room for alternate opinions," then you must not have read many of the posts -- or the comments. I, for one, disagreed with Laurie in the first place!)

Mike,

If Laurie is allowed to refer to a news organization that I regard highly in a derogatory manner (and wave HER politics, I might add), I should be allowed to criticize her point-of-view. Period. My post wasn't a personal assault on her, or critical of her for HAVING a point of view...just my opinion OF her point of view.

1. I read the comment. It was a criticism of the person, not a critique of the point of view.
2. If you want to say "Fox News is great, and I like the fact that Aldo's has it on TV," that's fine by me. (Personally, I don't care for Fox News, but I also don't mind the fact that Aldo's sometimes has it on TV.) But the blog isn't here for debates about the news media or national politics or moral philosophy. So anyone who wants to have their say about why Fox News is a great thing, period, should say it somewhere else. The blog is here for discussion of things happening in and around Mt. Lebanon.

How did this dialog end up on a post about the possible demolition of the Denis Theater??

Suzanne,
We know Mike and he's good people. I'd take him at his word on this one. We're amused and appalled that our shop became a flashpoint of political controversy simply for having the news captions on.

We haven't heard anything about the Denis yet. If we do we'll pass it on.

It's OK, Suzanne, I learned to ignore flames many years ago. I don't lose any sleep over name-calling (though terms like "capitalist," "atheist" and "feminist" and "liberal are all complimentary terms in my book).

Fox isn't true "news." It's a venue for blatant fear-mongering and a mouthpiece for the Bush administration. I got to listen to it daily while visiting my mother in October 2001. That was the week of the anthrax scare. It was all hyperbole, all the time. I won't frequent any establishment that plays it.

I did go back to Aldo recently, saw that they were using the TV to play classical music - thanks! The coffee and snack were both OK.

Back to the original topic!

While I liked the kind of movies the Denis played, the building and the equipment were in very poor shape. I think that end of the block should come down, though I hope Potomac Bakery lands safely someplace else.

Well, Suzanne, I guess I need to give you room to reply, if you want to. But I really wish that *everyone* would take their politics somewhere else! I moderate comments on my other blogs. BlogLebo doesn't do that. Yet.

Slightly changing the subject, I grew up in Mt. Lebanon and fondly remember going to the Denis ALONE on Saturday mornings to catch the 50 cent kiddie matinees. The Denis was always full of kids, no parents necessary.

That was in the 60's. It was a very different time. And I am suddenly feeling SO OLD!

Anyway, I haven't been in Mt. Lebanon in decades but I hate the idea of the Denis being demolished.

*sigh*

This topic caught my attn right away (and it is good to see we are getting back to the original point) because I was just walking down Rt 19 a few wks ago, lamenting the THREE empty theaters in a two mile stretch, and the STILL un-used building that was the former Dormont Firestation. What waste. I have no resources myself, but I wish someone who did would realize the value of restoration. Mt. Lebanon is mod enough to bring clientele to a funky ex-movie theater turned playhouse or live music cafe. And can you imagine an art or community center in the old firehouse? (I know this is in Dormont, but really, we bleed into each other.) Anyway, it is really sad. I wish I wish....

I too would love to see the Denis re-opened but I'm not sure it would be successful. Other neighborhoods have tried to reopen old theatres only to fail...its tough to compete against the huge multi-screen places. I sigh when I drive by the old South Hills theatre and also the Hollywood in Dormont. The Denis was a great place to see a movie and I remember having a birthday party there then we all went to Bimbo's for pizza.

Now what I really want to find out is the identity of the jerk who for past two weeks has let his/her dog poop in front of the Denis' door without picking it up!!
