Turning Up the Heat on the Zamagias TIF Application

Bill Matthews has been hard at work organizing arguments against the TIF proposal submitted by Zamagias Properties for the development proposed for the corner of Washington Road. Bill sent me copies of three documents, which I've posted for downloading:

An Open Letter to Mt. Lebanon neighbors [pdf], which argues that the TIF is a bad deal. "TIF is a tax diversion instrument. The Zamagias plan diverts funds that otherwise would be available to the school and municipal budgets. Looking forward, our budgets “will be what they will be” and Mt. Lebanon taxpayers will be making up for the diverted taxes with our own tax payments."

Relevant information from the Zamagias TIF application. [pdf]

The school board has now voted to participate in the TIF committee, and has appointed board members Mark Hart and Josie Posti, and finance director Jan Klein to represent the district. Their email addresses are available on the district web site. If you have an opinion about this (mis)use of taxpayer money you should contact these members, the rest of the board, and the municipal commissioners to express your opinion. $10 million dollars, over 20 years, should not be diverted from the municipality and the school district to line the pockets of a private developer. You should also watch to see if the TIF meetings are announced publically and open to the community; this committee has no legal right to be hold their discussions behind closed doors.
