Mt. Lebanon police arrested two South Hills men for burglarizing eight Mt. Lebanon homes and they intend to arrest a Mt. Lebanon businessman for purchasing and distributing the stolen items.
On Saturday morning, Mt. Lebanon police arrested Michael Evangelista, 22, of Mt. Lebanon and Matthew Allen, 21, of Castle Shannon and charged them with eight counts each of burglary, theft and conspiracy and possession of controlled substances.
Police plan to charge Bruce Henkel, 53, owner of Distinction Jewelry on Beverly Road, with crimes relating to the purchase, destruction and distribution of the stolen items.

Reading stuff like this makes me very thankful to have the police force we do, "traffic calming" and SWAT hummer or not. I hereby take back all my cheeky remarks. Great job, MLPD.
Hey Anonymous -- what strategy are you talking about? I don't think I've ever seen every other car pulled over in this town, so I'm wondering what you're alluding to.
I know that you won't give your name in the reply, but I'd really like to hear back from you about your initial comment. If you're going to put a comment out there like that, it would be good to try and back it up with some facts!

Anonymous was not serious and there is nothing to back up his or her statement. The fact is, that the police department only pulls over every seventh car - anyone else who says different is only stiring up the pot!
Kudos to the MLPD, who knows how many other criminal families are lurking amongst us!

A couple of anonymous comments were submitted that made offensive, disparaging comments about Bruce Henkel's alleged political affiliations. I rejected the comments. They were rejected because the comments were baseless and offensive, and they would have been offensive and would have been rejected regardless of the political party and/or political beliefs in question. Joe and I have been pretty good at keeping Democrat vs. Republican vs. Other political debate off of the blog, and focusing on local news and issues, and we'll continue to do that.

Although Mr. Henkel's 5 br, 2.5bath house with over 2600 sq feet of living space being assessed, according to the county website, at only $85,000 does seem questionable..
I saw "Democrats vs. Republicans vs. Others" and all I could think of was this.

Bruce Henkel called me yesterday (May 2, 2007) and complained, politely, about anonymous comments on this post that made indirect disparaging references to his jewelry business.
Rereading the comments, I don't find them defamatory (and I didn't find them defamatory when they were posted), and I don't believe that their authors or Joe and I, as blog admins, have any legal responsibility here. Also, there's a federal law that gives Joe and me pretty broad legal immunity, but that's a different story.
Still, we don't need unnecessary headaches, and we'd like the blog to remain as open and welcoming as possible for civil discussion. Anonymity can be a good thing, but it has its costs. And one of them, once in a great while, is that anonymous comments will get screened or deleted. So, in the interest of headache avoidance, I've removed the comments that Bruce H. was referring to.
