MOUSER Projects at MLHS

Mt. Lebanon Advanced Placement Environmental Science students' models of a "green" high school might have an impact on future construction in their school district.

Upon completion of a unit on energy and energy conservation, juniors and seniors in Jennifer Cramer's and Lisa Hoover's classes presented their MOUSER -- Making Our School Environmentally Responsible -- projects to their classmates last week.

On a different note:
Apparently Mt. Lebanon school district is now considering using the first 2 days of spring break as makeup days instead of adding them at the end of June due to summer school beginning the next week. As many teachers have planned vacations for spring break, this would involve numerous substitute teachers. Mt. Lebanon already has 2 extra days built into their calendar (182 days instead of the state mandated 180 days). Why make up the days at all? Why not save the cost of all the substitute teachers that will be necessary especially since so many children will be on vacation anyway?

Alternatively, there is an in-service day scheduled for May 14th that would certainly affect less students, and would save the school district the cost of the many substitute teachers that would be needed during spring break school days.

Anyone care to comment?

I don't know how they can change the dates as they have already announced the make up dates at the end of the school year. IMO the spring break is a waste. OK, I know that some folks schedule vacations then, but only because of the break. If it hadn't been already scheduled, no one would have made plans.
I would rather not make up the extra 2 days. The make up days at the end of the year are pointless, as the kids will be there in body only, their minds will be elsewhere. The high school kids will just not go.

At tonight's school board meeting Dr. Wilson addressed the make-up schedule and said that he did not see spring break being used.

I have to agree with everyone, that adding days at the end of the school year will just have kids going for the sake of going, they really won't be productive. I am however, very curious about the post regarding the fact there are 182 days of school in the Mt. Lebo calendar. If this is in fact true, why are we adding days on... Didn't we used to build 1 or 2 extra days into the calendar to avoid these situations?

I think there should be year round schooling, with a few weeks off here and there....Then this stuff wouldn't take place.

But I understand it is more important for teachers to have a few months off, so the kids can hang out at the mall.

Quite honestly, I think we should discuss the origins of this problem - bad calls on the cancellations. I don't wish to sound like my grandfather, but... when I attended Mt. Lebanon in the 60's and 70's, we simply didn't have cancellations and multiple delays. And those were the days when most households had a parent at home during the day!
I remember walking 1.75 miles to the high school on completely ice-covered sidewalks. I don't remember reports of broken bones or frostbite. You bundled up (except for teenagers (sigh)) and trudged to school. You arrived a chilled and soggy, but no worse for the wear. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
The recent cold days weren't that cold (I went running as did one of my happy-to-have-the-day-off teenagers). The district should have called a delay so that parents could make driving arrangements. For those parents who felt it too cold to send their kids - their kids could receive an excused absence.
BTW - I love the week off in Spring. It's our family vacation time. We don't go away in the summer. Anonymous Mom of 3

Cancellations and delays are calls by the Superintendent. Just so you know.

Cyber school is gaining in popularity in the past two years....I wonder if anyone has done a study on how this is going to impact the population and growth needs of new schools...before we build a new one.

Should school closing philosophy being a question in the new Superintendent search? Does the Superintendent consider what a burden it puts on families when a parent has to call off work or call in late? School delays are a hassle!
