More Trees Disappearing

A neighbor asked: What's up with the disappearing street trees? There isn't any gas line or electrical line work going on in the neighborhood. Still, lots of trees -- especially sycamores (or perhaps London plane trees?) have been cut down in the last few weeks.

Mike -- I've been noticing the same thing in and around the Foster neighborhood. Some of it might be due to the emasculation of old, tall stately trees by Duquesne Light in the name of protecting overhead electric lines. The over-pruning and topping in too many cases results in death of the trees one or more years later. I'm not aware of any spreading tree diseases,etc.. Perhaps a call to Tom Kelley, Dir. of Public Works for MtL (412 343-3869)would provide an answer to "Whats up..?". A call to Pam Burrett, Pres. of the Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy might also be in order.
