Commissioners Favor Two Pool, $10 Million Plan

Mt. Lebanon commissioners appear to be endorsing a nearly $10 million outdoor aquatic center that would include a leisure pool and a 50-meter competitive pool.

In an informal consensus poll at Tuesday's commissioners meeting, municipal Manager Stephen Feller said his administration needed time to hone ideas for the pool, but first wanted to know which of four options the board supported.

This pool comes with a $900,000 per year new tax cost (after revenue at the gate). The current pool costs less than $50,000 after gate revenues. This is almost a 1/2 mill increase on the township. On a $200,000 house it be almost $100 per year just for a pool that operates 3 months per year. It will make a nice accessory to the 1/2 million dollar playground in the park.

Good point above. And, by the way, is it just me that looks at that new playground and says to him or herself, "Are you kidding me? 500K for this?". And then they build that nice, classy stone wall at the entrance and RUIN IT by putting that stupid, cheap white wood sign on top of it. Unbelievable!!! (Maybe someone can remind me how much we lose on the ice rink every year also.)

Also, What was wrong with the playground that WAS there? 500K should put a swingset in every 5-10 yr old in Lebo!

Also, don't forget the money wasted on that parklet on Alfred.

they can't even cut the grass or clean the bathrooms at the current pool. What makes anyone think that they'll be able to keep up with the upkeep that a "real" facility demands? Plus, you know darn well that it will cost more than the current $220 it now costs for a family membership. That is another tax (on top of the millage hike) to consider.

They could replace the existing pool for about $6.6 million. But this is Mt. Lebanon. We have to have a $9.9 million pool. What do they say on TV ... Give me a Break! The attendance on the bigger pool is up also. Probably from non-taxpayers. Where will they park? Are we going to convert more green space to parking? The only direction to expand parking is towards the side street off Mayfair. The consultant recommended a family pass rate of $275. If this goes though the only happy people will be the swim club.

You all should begin making more positive comments or David Franklin is going to come back on and call you malcontents and whiners!!

The Commission has turned over managing municipal services to Mr. Feller and will soon be renamed: the Mount Lebo Board of Taxation for Recreation and Public Subsidy.

I think Steven Feller does a great job managing Mt. Lebanon. Do you think it is an easy job? He does what the Mt. Lebanon Commissioners direct him to do. If you have complaints, you should attend a Commission meeting. Sorry if I sound like D.F.

I just don't get the pool...I have to agree with everyone else's posts that this just seems like a waste of money.

How about doing something to increase small business investment in Mt.Lebanon. I just don't see a pool as the type of investment that builds much of anything for the community--especially because WE ALREADY HAVE A POOL!

This pool ought to be part of the high school renovation project. Is Mt. Lebanon big enough for this? Or are we too egotistical to do more with less?

Get the School Board together with the Commissioners and have the municipality help share the cost of a really nice high school pool that can be used by the community as well. Let's SPEND LESS than we have to for a change!

The school doesn't want a 50 meter competition pool. High schools only need 25 meters for interscholastic swimming. However, the aqua club wants a 50 meter pool for the summer. If things stay on course, we will end up with a 25 meter indoor pool at the high school and a 50 meter outdoor pool in the park. This gives the swimmers (including the self-important coach and his growing team of non-resident swimmers in the aqua club) the best of everything at taxpayer expense.

School Directors and Township Commissioners have no idea how to work together. We need a 25 meter first class indoor competition pool at the high school. This pool will serve the school and community 12 months of the year. And we need a recreation pool in the park with suitable lap lanes for those wanting to swim laps.

We do not need a competition pool in the park ………with spectator seating for 750!

This is a really big project. I was going to post a link to the consultant's report - but it appears the "NEW" municipal website is being brought on-line. Today, "you can't get there from here." It is important to look at the facts of the project - stay tuned.

If we make the Rec Center a Rec Center/Senior Center, we should have a heated indooor pool for aqua exercise that can be utilized during the day by senior citizens.
There is no better exercise for arthritic joints than heated water therapy...a little coffee shop for socialization...a game room for card games, chess and scrabble, healthy cooking classes, ballroom dancing classes,
bingo,computer classes, pilates,
book club meetings, knitting groups...the possibilities are endless. Mt. Lebanon would be known for excellent school districts and senior citizen activities.

I'm personally trying to figure out why a 500K park doesn't have a working water fountain. Anyone else notice that? :)
