Group Forming To Help Elderly Stay In Homes

Imagine making one phone call to arrange landscaping services and a trip to the doctor, repair of the air conditioner, curtain hanging and help managing health care, all while signing up for a yoga class and booking a trip to New York City, at discount prices and with your friends screening the providers for you. Now imagine how valuable that service could be to a senior citizen living at home.

A group in Mt. Lebanon wants to do just that by creating the Mt. Lebanon Living-at-Home Alliance, a nonprofit group that would help seniors avoid moving to retirement communities by supporting them as they stay independent. It would give members referrals to services by pre-screening providers and offering discounts. The membership cost has yet to be determined.

Having 2 grandma's, 1 in a nursing home, and the other at home, I have found that a nursing home is best. They have activities all day, meet new people, and seem to get healthier, and definitely are happier.

I know that has to be a tough decision, but sometimes leaving your home is for the best.

Your Grandma is the exception! I am in healthcare...I don't know of too many happy nursing home patients...are you sure you don't mean personal care home?

My mother spent the last six years of her life in a nursing home. Even though she got very good treatment there she was very unhappy. It was a blessing when she finally passed away and was finally at peace.

There are some things worse than death.

I believe that some of Mr. Franklin's " do nothing but whine and complain meeting goers " are instrumental in this worthy cause. See election blog postings.

Some citizens lead in ways that go unnoticed. Thank you to those working so hard on this project. It is yu that realize that this generation made Mt. Lebanon what it is today. Let's do something in this community for the seniors! They deserve to stay in their homes...not be taxed out of the community and shoved into a nursing home.

This group is doing great work - with a true MTL Sense of Community. They should be commended.
