MTLSD Lags In Issuing Emergency Notice

During a school emergency, officials are finding they can't communicate with parents quickly enough.

That's what Mt. Lebanon administrators discovered last week during a 13-minute lockdown of the high school that was enacted after a student who had been involved in a fight with another student in the cafeteria left the school and threatened to return, making a reference to the Columbine School incident.

Apparently, there is a lack of communication with staff also. According to two students, even though they were in lockdown, they were allowed to leave their classrooms to go to the restroom.
They were disturbed that police in the halls, curtly ordered them to return to their rooms immediately.
Regardless of whether the lockdown was justified in this incident... a lockdown is a lockdown!
Why were students permitted to leave their rooms?

After reading this article and hearing several versions of this story, it seems like once again the Mt. Lebanon School District is trying to backtrack and cover their behinds.

If this is as simple as the school administrators are trying to make it out to be, no child would have been sent for a physchiatric evaluation over just the mention of Columbine.

I think that with the school administration's past actions(or nonactions), we should all take their version with a very big grain of salt.

Perhaps you don't remember Columbine, let me refresh your memory 13 students and 1 teacher were killed. I certainly do think a physchiatric evaluation was warranted. By high school, kids should know the seriousness of mentioning something like Columbine in jest, so it should be taken seriously. Think of the lawsuits if nothing was done and something horrible happened!

I didn't mean to trivialize Columbine in any way.

What I meant to state is that there had to be alot more going on with this child and the situation than just that comment. There has to be a history behind this child's behavior.

The school district was negligent in putting out blanket statements before an investigation was completed. They have created more rumors than truth.
