The teachers average 5.14 over five years with retirement benefits increasing 11% last year and 10.8% this year. Add in health care costs and Act 1’s limit on millage increases and ask what is left for kids. No wonder the administrative raises are only 2.64%.
I think 2.64 is OK because compared to most of the nation, they are still almost double what other teachers get.
The average cost per pupil in MTLSD for the 2007/08 school year is budgeted to be $13,500. The PA average ( which includes large cities like Pittsburgh where the avg. is $20,000 -- which tends to disprove that spending more provides better results !)is something like $8,500. The budget shows that 75%of total operating expense of the district is comprised of salaries/wages and benefits. Some 75% of that amount is for teachers.
Mr. Allison is coming from a school district where the the cost of living is higher than that of Mt. Lebanon, and the salary of a 33+ year MA teacher will be $65,668 and a Ph.D./Ed.D teacher wil be $69,524 --- MTLSD scale is substantially higher. Anyone care to post by how much or provide comparitive $ ?
The www.mtlsd.org website lists the teacher salaries in their Extension Agreement (Contract).
Go to “District Offices” on the left.
Go to “Human Resources” across the top.
Go to "Contracts"
Under Teachers you will find “Extension Agreement . . .”
Salaries are listed by school year near the end of the Agreement.
Benefits are budgeted at approximately 33% of salaries in this year's budget documents on the website:
See www.mtlsd.org –
“School Board” on the left –
“Budget” across the top
Budget documents are on that page.
A Masters degree is $89,619 for 2007-2008 plus 33% for benefits is $119,193.
A Masters degree is $94,219 for 2009-2010 plus 33% for benefits is $125,311.
A Doctor’s degree is $96,707 for 2009-2010 plus 33% for benefits is $128,620
The amounts for 2009-2010 are reached in 16 years.
Another $1,000,000 or more is payable in Extra Duty Responsibility (EDR)
(Note: There are two pools, one for Extra Duty Positions and one for Interscholastic Sports under Article 89 of the Extension Agreement). There is a Contract amount and a higher Pool(s) amount payable in the Contract according to public statements by the Board President.)
