Commissioners Discuss New Aquatic Center

After hearing a consultant's four final recommendations for a new aquatic center, commissioners had whittled the selections to two outdoor choices: A new bathhouse and a combined leisure pool and competitive eight-lane, 25-yard pool for $7.4 million or a new bathhouse and separate leisure pool and competitive 50 meter pool for $9.7 million.

But at a July 9 meeting, commissioners asked consultants from Councilman-Hunsaker to give them estimates for how much it would cost to simply replace the current 50-meter pool.

Consultant D. Scot Hunsaker said he would do the work and also pull out the figures for the bathhouse redo, since that would be a good portion of the cost.

There is no timetable for the decision but at least four commissioners would need to approve a bond issue for the project. Three commissioners chose not to seek a seat in this year's election so the board will have three new faces in January.

This is a good development. I would like to know which Commissioner is providing the leadership and reality check.

The Community benefits from a 1st class outdoor pool, it can be a recreational pool or a competitive pool with Community friendly features - but certainly not a waterpark AND competitive pool. Head to Sandcastle or the Wave pool for that much fun. We also do not need a 750 seat grandstand. The downside to a 50 meter pool could be the proposal for heating the water - that is a bunch of water.

Also - many in the Community thought the Municipality and School District should talk about how they could work together. My thoughts were not focused on having "one" pool facility - but more along the lines of how a 12 month, competitive swimming facility at the high school can be complemented with an outdoor recreation pool. Regrettably, I am not aware of any constructive dialogue or cooperation on the subject.
