Wow, I knew things were bad but I had no idea. I have to say that I'll really miss Molly's. My hope is that someone will reopen using the same concept (but proper management!).

My wife and I had dinner there the other night and I commented that the service was so lousy that the place would not last until the end of the year. She now thinks I am brilliant!

Damn. I'm no legal wiz, so does this mean that the place has to shut down immediately? Or can they continue to operate until and if a new building owner comes forward? I just tried calling and nobody picked up the phone but their website still shows a full slate of activities coming up.

They should tear 'em all down and get a big Crate and Barrel or other similar store in town. We need a destination store here that exists nowhere else. Steve Feller, are you listening?

Just ate there this weekend with a big party and the food and service were great as always (I am amazed that so many others claim to have such bad experiences there), but the place was dead.

It will be missed if this is the end.

The food was always sort of average--nothing extraordinary. For downtown eateries to work, you have to create a memorable experience (e.g., Aladdins). Great location and decor. I hope new ownership can turn around something on the site.

Crate & Barrel? If we go down the path of "destination stores" it will wipe out the Ma & Pa stores. You would also have to make more parking. Not worth it.

Mom & Pop stores? There don't seem to be too many of those left and those that are are apparently not doing so hot. The key is getting a destination store there that doesn't really compete with the remaining Mom & Pops so that, after said visitor leaves destination store he/she feels it worthwhile to check out the local "scene". The long purported hotel across from Rolliers will help as well. God only knows why we need a hotel in Mt. Lebo, but who am I to tell people on ways to waste the bank's money.

The worst thing in the world is to bring in Crate and Barrel type businesses. Are you crazy? That would ruin the great "main street" feeling we have going. Do you think that type of business gives a crap about keeping the home town feeling of Mt. Lebanon in place? The more you shop at big chain stores the more quickly you put out the ma and pop people--or the entrepreneurs who put their blood sweat and tears into making a successful business work. I can’t stand people who complain about the businesses on Washington Rd. Many of us work hard to keep our businesses going at the expense of our families and personal lives. We do a lot to support the community with fun events for all that don’t always benefit our actual business. Give us some appreciation! Hi Yaaa you said “There don't seem to be too many of those left and those that are are apparently not doing so hot” Maybe if you stop shopping at the chain stores and support the ma and pa’s we would be doing “hot”.

Main Street feel? Maybe during the Ultra party.

There is nothing Main Street about thousands of cars trying to beat the next untimely red light, while swerving lane to lane so they don't get stuck behind somebody trying to turn or park.

The only way to have that be a main street is to have a bypass. This isn't possible because Lebo would lose out on some taxes from homes that would have to be removed.

Customers decide where to spend their money based on what's important to them: price, service, selection, quality, availability, shopping experience... whatever. Business owners have to decide what segments of the market they want to serve, then execute in a way that meets their customers expectations. The dominant factor these days seems to be low prices (hence the rise of Wal-Mart). This often results in tradeoffs on quality, service, "shopping experience", areas in which Mom & Pop places tend to excel. A free market will sort itself out.

Personally, I'd rather pay more to ensure that I'm getting a quality product or to have an exceptional dining experience.

Main Street "feel" in Mt. Lebo? Sorry, the only true main street we have with any feel is in Sewickley.

I was using the "Ma & Pa" designation generically. Basically I mean small independently owned places. These are the backbone of Washington Rd, and for that matter much of our economy. If we change our priorities to attract the chain retailers, the whole game changes: (e.g., rents go up, streets have to be widened, more parking structures go up, parking enforcement goes up, auto traffic goes up considerably).
I would much rather maintain the downtown walking atmosphere that we currently have. I don't think the failure of Molly Brannigan's is cause for us to rethink our policies re downtown commerce. But I do think it should be instructive for other businesses going downtown--service and quality are the name of the game.

I hadn't heard about the hotel. Is that really going to happen?

OK for all of you lawyer folks out there, please tell me how this works! If you pay the back taxes do you own the building? Or do you assume the mortgage? What would be the benefit to buying a building at a Sheriff's sale?

I know nothing specifically of the MB's case, but in general:

A successful bidder at the sale buys the property subject to all liens recorded prior to his or her own, if the bidder is a lien holder, and subject to all liens, period, if the bidder is not, including tax liens, judgment liens, and liens recorded by mortgage holders. That means that the liens either need to be paid off or made subject to new deals. Any lienholder may choose to bargain with the bidder, reducing the face amount of the lien in exchange for whatever promises the bidder is willing to make (payoff schedule, operating contingencies, etc.) The current owner, of course, is usually entitled to bid (and bargain), too.

In other words, don't think of a judicial foreclosure as necessarily simple, orderly, 1-2-3-and-it's-over legal proceeding. It is often simnply the first step in a complicated negotiation.

What happened on 9/7? Did the Sheriffs' sale happen,or did someone step forward and arrange an out, temporarily or otherwise?
