Mystery Service Station

While standing in line at the PNC Bank on Beverly Road this morning, I turned around and looked at the auto repair shop across the street from the bank. I've always wondered about the place because it doesn't have any signs on it at all, yet it's always packed and they are always working in there.

Anyone care to share any info on the place? They must be really good if they don't even advertise their name on the building. How do people get their cars worked on? Do they just walk in or is it referral only?

I don't know about that specific place, but I've been to others like it, and yeah, they're typically so good that they don't need to advertise. Holland's on Sleepy Hollow (near the Giant Eagle) was like that. I don't know if they're still operating. I figure old man Holland must have retired by now, but his son may have taken over.

My experience is that you can usually just walk in -- though lots of places like that specialize in a specific kind of car. I seem to remember that the place on beverly had mostly german cars in the lot, but that was long ago. (Holland specialized in VWs, when I was in high-school and college)

We used to live over on that side of Mt. Lebanon. The previous poster's assumption is correct - they are so established and good at what they do that they have no need for new customers. I walked in once requesting service and the owner politely told me about his business. It is unfortunate that they need to be located at the end of a nice business district, though.

Unfortunately, it looks as though no one knows the name of the business there -- since it hasn't been posted in a comment. I'm just wondering what the name of the business is and how long they've been there.

The shop is called Beverly Service, and it's an anchor business (so it's not a shame that it's in the business district!!!) The phone number is 412-341-3100. It's owned by Jim Biery and has been in my family forever (owned by my Granddad before him). They are very good at what they do. I have some letterhead of the shop with photos from years and years ago. Very classic cars (and also newer models) and yes, he is always busy... but so good at what he does! Stop by and say hello sometime - and if you ask nicely he may even give you a tour of the shop with the old cars in back... When I was little I used to love playing with the gaskets in so many shapes and colors hanging on the wall in the back (they're still there, and I'm almost 30!) I may be biased, but I'd call Beverly Service a landmark in Mt. Lebanon that everyone (and many already do) should appreciate.

Thanks, Robyn!

I've never used the shop, but I've heard great things.

And I completely agree with the point that the shop belongs where it is.

Beverly Service has been in that location on Beverly Rd since 1953...it is one of the oldest continuously run family owned businesses in Mt. Lebanon. I have taken my cars there for 30 years and the owner and his Dad are the most honest, polite, intelligent men you could ever hope to meet. They are the glue that has held that business district together. They have been there through thick and thin and weathered the 80's and 90's when a lot of the storefronts on that side of the street sat vacant. They have never bothered anyone and I think it is ignorant that "anonymous" thinks that it is "unfortunate" for them to be located in a nice business district. They have earned their right to be there and are a true asset to the Mt. Lebanon community. Many of their customers patronize those businesses and they brought customers in when no one else was. Just think how special a business must be to not have to advertise, not need a sign, and have all the business that they can handle! Now there is a successful small business story!! btw...here is another secret...there is a long time fabulous teacher at Lincoln School, her name is Mrs. Biery and she is the owner's wife!

Thanks to everyone that posted comments - especially Robyn who shared her family's ownership of it. It's great to learn about the shop and I also agree with Robyn that it should be in the Beverly Road business district. I'm guessing that a lot of people that get their cars/trucks worked on patronize the Beverly Road shops while they are there.
