Deer Cull Starts Again Next Month

Mt. Lebanon's Deer Management Program resumes next month with a cull conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

As with last year's successful program, trained sharpshooters from the USDA's Wildlife Division will follow strict guidelines, including operating only from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Dates will be announced shortly.

Commissioners recently authorized the department to cull up to 150 deer in response to safety concerns from residents, including reports of dozens of car accidents, property damage and health concerns related to the town's deer overpopulation.

I thought that following the 1st. culling earlier this year, the USDA/Muni reported that the post-culling deer count remained at 90 deer (precisely what the official government count was before the culling of 68 deer by the USDA... ?).

If the official count remained at 90, why is the USDA being authorized to cull 150 deer ? The cost has increased $21,000 and now totals $51,000.Can anyone explain the governments' fuzzy math ? Is the 3rd. attempt going to be for 200 deer @ $80,000 in 2009 ? Between the time of the conclusion of the 1st. culling and the decision by the Commission to folow the USDA recommendation to proceed with a 2nd. culling, how many cars were hit by deer in LeboLand, how many accidents were caused by deer, how many residents registered formal complaints with the Muni about property damage caused by deer (ie.garden, landscaping, etc.),how many cases of tick disease were registered with the county health department ? How many of anything to do with deer ?

While I agree that deer were becoming a problem, I believe our local government has over reacted with the aid of a federal government agency seeking publicity and extra funding from a gullible public.
