Lebo Campaigning Intensifies
Posted by request:
On Saturday, November 3rd many Mt. Lebanon residents received a postcard suggesting that they not vote for incumbents in the school board race. It was suggested that people should vote for four other candidates including Elaine Cappucci. As campaign manager of Friends of Elaine Cappucci I want to let the residents of Mt. Lebanon know that neither Elaine nor the campaign had anything to do with the mailer. From the time our campaign started early in 2007 to now we have not engaged in any mudslinging or dirty politics. We believe every candidate wants to work toward making a great place to live even better. We wish all of the candidates the best of luck on Tuesday.

Who paid for/distributed the postcard?
Ed and I were out knocking doors on Saturday. Ed was in the 1st ward and I was in the 3rd ward when we both came across the piece of literature around lunchtime. I was shaking someone's hand and on the top of his mail stack was this postcard. I immediately called our campaign members to make sure we had nothing to do with it. We have not campaigned negatively and do not plan to do so.
I assure you that our campaign had nothing to do with this mailer. It was paid for by the Save Mount Lebanon Schools Committee.
Best of luck to all the candidates.

So does anyone know who this "Save Mount Lebanon Schools Committee" is and who is behind it?
I was attending a luncheon on Saturday when a friend notified me by phone about the anti-incumbent mailer. I too am unaware of who the committee is that paid for this mailer.
I am running on my own merits and have not spoken negatively about any of the candidates.
I wish all of the candidates good luck on Tuesday.

A quick search of the Department of State's online database does not show any listing for a "Save Mt. Lebanon Schools Committee" or any similarly named entity.
It should be noted that within 20 days of receiving at least $250 in contributions, a Committee *must* register with the Department of State and identify the committee's Chair and Treasurer. The committee must also file certain financial reports as set for in the Camapign Finance Law.
I work downtown so a quick trip to the elections office during lunch break was all it took to find some information. Once armed with a name, a quick search of the web gave me the following articles penned by its Chairman:

My opinion is that it is not so much FOR the people mentioned in the piece as much as it is AGAINST the incumbents. A marriage of the four candidates 'endorsed' by the piece would be an odd one indeed.
*CitizenA*
I think Citizen A captures the essence of the message. As such - - I never thought any of the candidates sent it. In a town of 30,000+ there are plenty of folks with strong opinions.
Some folks think change at this time is imperative and in the best interest of our students and neighbors. This is most likely the sentiment of the Save Mt. Lebanon Schools Committee. Lest we forget, many folks in the Community are not pleased with the way many things have been handled (not just the Sable Buyout or Renovation Cost Escalations). They are looking for fresh leadership. Mr. Allison was a welcome addition to our leadership team and tomorrow the voters will have their way with the School Board.
For the record: I have a Sue Rose sign in my yard.
As a matter of public record, the chairman of the Save the Mount Lebanon Schools Committee is William C. Schmeltzer and the Treasurer is Calvin S. Lynch. As chairman of the Committee to Elect Sue Rose, I know the information contained in the two post cards recently sent to Mt. Lebanon residents contains numerous falsehoods. First, many of the cost figures cited are INCORRECT. Second, they assert that the school board members want to build a new high school. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FALSE. The school board has not had one discussion about the alternatives they will face regarding the high school. Nor have they been presented with any actual plans or real costs. THERE IS NO PLAN. NO ONE HAS EVER SAID THEY PLAN TO BUILD A NEW HIGH SCHOOL. I am sure that the majority of Mt. Lebanon citizens will consider the source (a big secret) and give these cards no credence.
By the way, if you want Sue Rose’s answers to these current allegations, check out her website at www.suerose.org.
The only thing Mr. Schmeltzer and Mr. Lynch and the Save the Mount Lebanon Schools Committee are “saving” is the real identity of those who paid approximately $10,000 (ten thousand dollars) to mail the erroneous cards.
A lot of us are still upset over the way the Sable buyout happened. Rarely am I a one-issue voter, but this is one of those times.
