Herpes Case Won't Cancel Wrestling In Lebo

The announcement that a wrestler at Mt. Lebanon High School has a suspected case of herpes will not cause any of the team's matches to be canceled or postponed, but the South Park High School team has decided to suspend its program until after the holiday break after two wrestlers there were diagnosed with the skin infection.

As a parent, it must be frightening to have your child involved in athletics, knowing there may be a potential for your son or daughter contacting some type of community-acquired skin disease. Some of these infectious diseases may have life-long reoccurances, too.

Not only do athletes have to contend with these problems, but us as a human population will always have to take precautions to prevent contact or spread of communicable diseases. This is in part due to the overuse of antibiotics and poor hygiene. Yes, handwashing and cleaning surfaces with bleach are the "gold standards", but there are also options that are answers to safe and easy long-term control of the spread of community-acquired infectious diseases.

It is my hope that the Mt.Lebanon wrestling team has an excellent winning season and no other athlete acquires suspected cases of mat herpes.
