Suds At The Golf Course?

Officials in Mt. Lebanon say it's time to make the public golf course friendly for beer drinkers.

In approving the 2009 budget, Mt. Lebanon municipality will apply for a liquor license for a portion of the clubhouse, which would be converted into a concessionaire where municipal employees would sell beer and other Mt. Lebanon golf course swag. Most of the details have yet to be finalized, but commissioners set the direction for the concessionaire on Dec. 15. The plan is not without its critics.

First, I've never been a fan of the style of negotiation that emphasizes the absolute worst case scenario or outcome for every issue. As such, the Myrtle School's arguments are lost on me. Do I want kids to be safe - of course. Does serving beer at the golf course make them less safe - of course not.

In fact, I would point to several local schools that are similarly situated in close proximity to establishments with liquor licenses (Lincoln, St. Bernards, and Washington).

Further, I think some of the principal's concerns are misplaced given the overall logistics. First, golf is primarily played during the summer months or on weekends when school is out. The only other times that students are milling around on Pine Ave would be between 7-8 AM and 3-4 PM Monday thru Friday. I would argue that those are not times during which many golfers will be completing a round of golf, having a beer and driving home.

Beer sales at the golf course are long overdue and will certainly improve the facility's current flat line status.

fwiw, having golfed for about 40 years, I don't recall ever seeing anyone imbibing too much in a clubhouse after a round (or half a round as in Mt. Lebo's case).

The only alcohol-related problems I've seen on a golf course occur when people bring coolers full of beer with them onto the course. So as long as that's being policed, it's unlikely there will be problems.

It's added revenue with little risk - and a good idea.

Ha ha ha, sure Dave, and you gave me heck for suggesting expanding the course to 18 holes. Good one.

Schultz, I'm not sure how the 2 are remotely connected. One costs virtually nothing and will have an instant return. The other is not only impractical, but would cost millions to implement, hundreds of thousands to maintain and offer no quantifiable increase in revenue.
