A big, bumpy cucumber basks in the sun, hanging above Fred Crissman's head. Mr. Crissman is yelling across the yard to his wife, laughing as he asks, "Hey Ar, how many variations of flowers do you think we have here?"
Arlene Crissman turns and stares at her husband for about 15 seconds, and then shakes her head as if to say "You've got to be kidding me." The "hundreds upon hundreds" of precisely planted flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruits growing in hand-crafted, screened-in, wooden enclosures in the Crissman yard were not organized by a professional landscaper.

We were able to attend the tour this year, again. What I like about the Garden Tour is that they try to get gardens that are different from each other. No swimming pools this time, but I liked the contrast of a vegetable garden on the first stop, and then a stone patio with a waterfall on the last.
If anyone has the chance to go in future years, please do. Not only does it support the library, but the gardens are fabulous. It's a bit daunting to think about how much time these people all put into making their outdoor spaces lovely.
Preliminary results for the Garden Party, held Saturday night before the garden tour, show that the library raised just under $20,000.
This is the largest amount since we began keeping records in 2001, and is very impressive considering the economy. This also shows, I believe, how much this community values our library. Please go back and read the post about the impending funding problems the library faces and contact the RAD board to express your concerns.
