Latest News Regarding Possible Post Office Closing On Washington Road

Municipal Manager Stephen Feller was quoted in the following article regarding the closure of the Export, PA post office:
One post office targeted for closure has been on Washington Avenue in Mt. Lebanon for many years.

"We received a letter from the post office recently stating they were still evaluating the situation and it would not be closed this fiscal year, which just ended. That doesn't help much," said Steve Feller, Mt. Lebanon's municipal manager. "From our perspective it would be a mistake to close that facility. We think this facility is unique because it serves a very large senior citizen population. A large majority of residents walk to that facility. If it's no longer there, they're going to have a difficult time handling their postal needs."

I would assume it is also used and relied upon by all the local governmental agencies in the central business district, plus the library and all the business owners located in "Uptown", including residents beyond just "seniors". This will impact Tim Murphy's office as well.

Does the USPS have any fact-based data to support that this PO is not cost efficient or effective ?

There's a difference between using the post office to deposit first class letters and using the post office for other services (packages, registered/insured mail, other non-postal business such as passport applications). The question to my mind isn't whether this PO (or any other PO) is cost effective; it is the most effective *overall* distribution of PO resources across the region, given declining resources in general.

Yeah Mike....there is a difference, and it is a significant difference; however, I believe the USPS is using their versions or definitions of cost effectiveness or efficiency to determine who stays opens and who closes. And if this is the case, they are in conflict with their mission statement of being customer oriented and service dedicated.

Interestingly, last week the $800,000/year head of the USPS testified before a congressional subcommittee and claimed the "Service" was exploring a number of additional products and services, several of which were not postal related or dependant, that local PO's could offer in order to increase net revenues and take advantage of their locales and retail space. I wonder if the closure decisions and this move are being done independently..ie. a *disconnect*... or ? ?
