Rally Planned In Mt. Lebanon Over Obama's Speech

Mt. Lebanon residents will rally at a school board meeting to protest the school district's decision to let teachers decide to show President Barack Obama's speech to students in September.

President Obama's speech initially aired on Sept. 8, as many kids across the country were going back to school.

With all that's going on in Lebo these days and with all of the questionable decisions that have been made on matters that will have far greater implications on every last one of us (including our kids), is this really the issue that people want to "rally" around?

Remember protesters - your hero has a Nobel Peace prize now. So keep it peaceful. Stay away from the "Hell no, we want show" type of rants and maybe focus more on the weed-induced sit in, kumbaya, type of protests of your youths.

Agreed! They should be protesting the Republican led $115m high school project! Bd Members Remely and Silhol are true RINO's (Republican In Name Only).

Stuart, the ONLY board members who have been active and vocal about reining in the cost of building/renovating the high school are James Fraasch and Mark Hart. To single out two of the other seven is not accurate or fair.

I was up there and can report no rally of protestors just residents voicing their opinions on how the district handled the speech. Very peaceful. I did get to see (I think) live and in living color a regular Blog Lebo-ite...hint: bring extra handouts for the audience!

Joe - I agree re Hart and Fraasch. Your statement, however, proves my point. Do the math - Kubit (R), Rose (R), Silhol (R), Remely (R), Stipanovich (D), Cappucci (D), Posti (D). Agree with it or not, facts are facts and, other than Fraasch and Hart, the board is 4 to 3 Republican (I note the Republican Committee website cites the above Republican party identification) and they are the ones driving this project. IF all the Republicans were opposed to the $115m price tag, this project goes nowhere. I say this with deep disappointment as a former Mt. Lebo registered Republican.

Here is the handout:
http://tinyurl.com/WRM-Handout

Note:
1) Page 1 was prepared by me, Pages 2-4 were prepared by the District's financial advisor.

2) Pages 2-4 are "models" reviewed by the Board in its decision making process - They do not depict the actual bond issue.

3) Bond issues are complex financial instruments and simplistic representations such as "the millage impact under both tax-exempt and the BABs finanacing is the same over the two bond issues" as made by Dr. Steinhauer, may not only be simplistic - they can be erroneous.

Stuart, I agree with you. The R's (except Fraasch and Hart)are NOT acting like R's and the D's ARE acting like D's, and they both want to spend way too much money.

A little more explanation on my observations...

Dr. Steinhauer in stating that "the millage impact under both tax-exempt and the BABs finanacing is the same over the two bond issues" could only have been referring to the total net millage increase (3.56 mills) under each scenario.

In my book, if the increase of one scenario raises more tax revenue than the increase of another - albeit with the same net increase - the impact is not "the same" - it is by definition greater.

To evaluate the "function" of taxes, one must not only consider the distance between two points, but also (and far more importantly) the slope of the curve. The area under the curve represents our tax bill.

Dave and Joe,

I think how we teach our children to respect or not respect the Office of the President is a worthwhile discussion.

The administration ducked rather than led and they are getting called on it.

Just because this is not another post about the new high school (which indeed is very important) doesn't mean it is not worthy of discussion or that the school board and administration should not be held accountable for their stance on the issue.

The SD administration respects the office of the President.
On 11-SEP-2009, the President ordered all flags to be at half-staff.
The SD administration complied with the order.
