We Won't Be Getting A Trader's Joe's...
...but Upper St. Clair is trying to! From the Pittsburgh Business Times:
More than four years after first landing in East Liberty, specialty grocer Trader Joe’s is preparing its second store in the Pittsburgh region on Washington Road in Upper St. Clair.
A proposal for the new store was presented on Monday evening before Upper St. Clair’s board of commissioners, who chose to table the requests until its January meeting for further review.
A company called 1600 Washington Road Associates, led by local developer Tony Ross, sought a conditional use approval for a 12,000-square-foot Trader Joe’s at 1630 Washington Road. The location currently operates as a Pier One Imports store.

Close enough! They have great gluten-free food at a reasonable price. This is wonderful news!!!

I'm glad they'll be nearby; but, sad they'll not be in Lebo.
They considered locating in our Uptown on Washington Road a couple of years ago, on the site now scheduled for a hotel. Uptown needs a good crocery store. I gather lot coverage and parking were to them insurmountable obstacles.
Some have claimed that the current Dollar General site on Cochran Road was also considered; however, few realize that property is owned by Giant Eagle (through a subsidiary)...it would be unlikely that G E would sell to a competitor.
I also understand that the now vacant former Foodland in the Lebanon Shops on Mt. Lebanon Blvd. will become a speciality food store, name unknown as those who do know have been sworn to secrecy.

Elaine,
There is a relatively new, small gluten-free food speciality store on Alfred Street in Uptown...maybe you've been there ?

Thanks, Bill. Yes, I have. It is called Eden's Market and it is well stocked with gluten-free food. I have never seen a better selection anywhere else. I think Jeff Weiner, another MTL graduate, carries all the hard to find gluten-free food that you can't find elsewhere.
