The Almanac: Library cuts staff

Somewhere on the vast shelves of the Mt. Lebanon Public Library is a copy of Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities."

A partial quote from the first sentence "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times . . . " pretty much summed up the month of January for the library.

An unexpected infusion of money from the Mt. Lebanon Commissioners permitted the library to reopen on Sundays beginning Jan. 9, but additional funding cuts from other sources forced the layoff of four employees Jan. 20 and 21. Three were full-time employees, one worked part time.

This mirrors what is and has been happening in the private sector, and is about to happen in most state and federal government government agencies.

It is happening in the Lebo muni government with the intended consolidation of the Parking Authority into the muni for cost and efficiency (and personnel reduction) reasons. However, it would not surprise me to learn that the school district might be adding employees while enrollment continues to decrease as it has been and they have been over the past 10 years....in a community where increases in real estate taxes have been and are growing at twice the rate of reported earned income during the same period of time.

The school district wants to add an owner's rep position in addition to Marciniak and Davis along with the help of Steinhauer, Remely and Cappucci.
Steinhauer indicated a likely candidate will be a retired educator double-dipping the taxpayers. Listen to the recording of the meeting online. David Huston
