Trib: Mt. Lebanon officials won't agree to closed meetings

Mt. Lebanon commissioners rescinded their agreement to participate in closed-door meetings with members of the school board last week, citing legal advice that the meetings should instead be held with public participation.

Commissioners Joe DeIuliis and Dave Brumfield initially agreed to serve on the "joint steering committee" with school board President Josephine Posti and Vice President Dale Ostergaard, who would meet in closed-door executive sessions to facilitate more freewheeling conversation and protect discussions of legal matters, Posti said. But commission President Dan Miller said last week the commissioners wouldn't join the meetings unless they were open.

I hope the school district decides to participate, even though the meetings must now be open to the public. If it decides not to, it sends the message that it would forgo the benefits of better coordination with the municipal government, and for what? So that it can avoid public scrutiny?

That’s probably not the best message to send.

Let us not forget this School Board's public pledge of increased transparency not that many weeks ago...their current attitude and behavior reveals them to be guilty of a disturbing credibility gap !

I suspect there will be some lame-o appeal to the effect of "upon further scrutiny, several complications unfortunately will keep it from moving forward."

That, or they'll keep mum about the reason. After all, if they're not interested in sharing with the public in the first place, why start now?

Commissioners Joe (Ward 3)and Raja (Ward 1) voted against open meetings even though Mt. Lebanon Solicitor Philip Weis advised the commissioners that the meetings would be better off open to the public.

Wow, congratulations to our two commissioners for...um..well..what? Doing the right thing? Isn't that what they're SUPPOSED to do? Good Lord, people, Lebo is turning into a joke. At first, it was just the school board making a mockery of the political process. But now it's creeping into the commission. What a shame.

Maybe I'm missing something but why would any of this even have been a question in anyone's mind? A closed door meeting with two members of the school board? HAHA! Great message to send, especially in light of how the school board and our superintendent have been acting. What's next, sending our tax dollars to Cuba? Why don't we set up an exchange program with Libya? And just a reminder, folks--the school board has YET to justify spending the "$113 milllion". (I have to put that in quotes not just to be smarmy but also because it's a completely false number.)

Tick tock, tick tock...elections are just a few months away. Hopefully, people in this community wake up and decide to take back Mt. Lebanon.
