P-G: Mt. Lebanon suspends coach accused of leaving kids in car

Mt. Lebanon School District has suspended its high school swim team coach pending a police investigation surrounding charges that he left his two young children unattended in his car.

David Schraven, 44, of Mt. Lebanon, was charged Aug. 25 with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle.

P-G: Mt. Lebanon senior attains goal -- a state title in 500 freestyle

Four years ago Mt. Lebanon's John Nappi qualified for the PIAA championships as a freshman, finishing ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sometime shortly after that, he decided that competing for a gold medal in that event was what he wanted to spend the next three years doing.

Nappi set his goals on a state title but he knew he was likely going to have to wait until his senior year.

P-G: Not as deep as last year, Lebo still has talent pool

With all the talent the Mt. Lebanon boys' swimming team graduated last season, goals and strategy will be a little different when coach Dave Schraven and his team head to the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool for the WPIAL championships next month.

After five WPIAL qualifying swimmers, including two PIAA medalists, graduated, the Blue Devils will likely not be a contender for the team title at the WPIAL championships March 3-4.

The Almanac: Nappi goes the distance

John Nappi goes the distance. Always has. He is afterall a champion 500-yard freestyler. Recently though he has added speed and versatility to the mix and that has made the Mt. Lebanon senior unstoppable in swimming these days.

While he won his signature swim, at the 2009 WPIAL championships, Nappi tossed in a gold medal, too, in the 200 individual medley, an event that features all four stroke disciplines. In addition to lowering his time by six seconds, Nappi also finaled at the PIAA championships last March and ranked in the Top 40 in the country.

Mt. Lebanon Men Finish Fifth In State During Swimming Finals

Despite only having seven swims at the PIAA championships, Mt. Lebanon finished fifth in the state. In the boys' team standings, the Blue Devils racked up 140 points.

According to head coach Dave Schraven an indication of how well Lebo swam is to compare to the finish of fourth-place squad. Emmaus needed 19 swims to rack up 158 points.

"We improved our time and our seed in every event," Schraven added.

Versatile, Veteran Duo Propels Mt. Lebanon

In football, fans often talk about a team having thunder and lightning in the backfield. In the swimming pool, Mt. Lebanon coach Dave Schraven has pretty much the equivalent.

He has senior sprinter, Sho Sugimoto and junior long-distance swimmer, John Nappi.

Both helped Mt. Lebanon to a second-place, Class-AAA finish at the WPIAL championships last season and will be the driving force for the Blue Devils boys' team this season.
