The Almanac: Seniors to have space at ML library

Baby boomers and beyond will soon have a dedicated space in the Mt. Lebanon Public Library.

Recently the library was awarded a $4,000 grant, supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, as administered by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. After completing a competitive application process, six libraries in Pennsylvania were awarded grants to create "Senior Spaces".

Teens Ready To Shovel For Mt. Lebo Seniors

When it snows in Mt. Lebanon, some residents, especially senior citizens, turn to neighbors and students to help remove snow from their sidewalks.

For about 10 years, Mt. Lebanon High School's community service office has run Chore Corps, a student volunteer group that shovels sidewalks for senior citizens.

"The program actually is to both help in the fall and the spring to rake leaves for our elderly in Mt. Lebanon community, and then in the wintertime to shovel snow ... for the elderly," said Judith Kolko, the community service coordinator for Mt. Lebanon School District.

Rep. Smith To Sponsor Senior Fair

From an email received this morning from Rep. Smith's office:

State Rep. Matt Smith (D-Mt. Lebanon), will sponsor a senior fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 at Galleria of Mt. Lebanon. The senior fair will include free information on a variety of state and local issues from 80 exhibitors, applications for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program and PACE and PACENET, free flu shots, door prizes and refreshments. Anyone on Medicare who wants to get a free flu shot is asked to bring his or her Medicare card. Guests will include KDKA radio personalities Dr. Knowledge and Miss Information, who are scheduled to attend from 11 a.m. to noon.
