Mt. Lebanon Community In Market For Gourmet Grocer

Mt. Lebanon residents might not have to go very far much longer to buy their crimini mushrooms, Soba noodles or apricot mango cheesecake.

A task force created in January by the Economic Development Council of Mt. Lebanon is exploring the feasibility of luring a gourmet grocer to the business district along Washington Road.

The best spot for something like this would be where Shop-n-Save USED to be on Cochran at the bottom of Academy Avenue.

I don't know about a supermarket, even a small one, but a greengrocer/bodega with fresh produce, breads, dairy that would be perfect in Uptown, even if they charged a hefty premium for things.

Can't tell you how many times I've been short a tomato or a bit of greens to finish up lunch service and had to borrow from Caruso's or Il Piz. We'd be a regular customer.

Rich,

You would have loved Gerst & Popko which was located somewhere around DiNardo's candy. Small grocer, great produce (huge tomatoes) and a butcher in the back of the store.

When my grandparents lived in a Florida Ave apartment I would walk up there via going in between the buildings with my grandma to buy all the basics. For years it was THE only place mom and grandma would think of getting the holiday turkey.

The old Shop n Save would be perfect. Unfortunately, that site is owned by Echo Development. Echo is the real estate arm of Giant Eagle. So, if anyone thinks that a specialty grocery store will some day replace the stylish Dollar Store - don't hold your breath.

The key on Washington Rd would be getting the parking structure to do "first 30 minutes free" 7 days a week. Parking is a perceived issue. A grocery store with a great deli would be great. Beverly Rd and Washington could each support their own store. People around Beverly have been hoping for years to have a grocery/deli
