Don't Forget This Increase

NOTE: The following article is a letter to the editor written by Mt. Lebanon resident Michele Randolph-Kavalir.

I am very disappointed to learn of the budget approval which occurred at the recent Mt. Lebanon school board meeting.

At a time when so many families are struggling financially, a 10 percent tax increase will add greatly to their hardship. Your disregard for these Mt. Lebanon families is cruel and ignorant. I believe that many families will have to make the unfortunate decision to move from Mt. Lebanon due to this tax increase. Then what?

Concerned Citizens of Mt. Lebanon wanted to share their tax relief link in Mt. Lebanon Magazine, but were told that the website was political in nature. We were just trying to help residents stay in their homes. Maybe by sharing the link here, it might help some stay in their homes. www.lebocitizens.com and go to the Tax Relief link.

I won't forget this increase, nor the next several consecutive annual double-digit increases.

"$15,000 per student next year! Can anybody beat that?" Yes.
The City of Pittsburgh School District is $19,882 per student.

"So, how does per pupil spending affect student achievement? The answer is not at all."

We are speaking out for the way the majority feels.

@Kathy Clark, I have been in contact with them, but their publication is quarterly. We want to get the news out NOW so that people see they may have some options. There is also information on our site if people are in danger of foreclosure. The list of Mt. Lebanon homes on the sheriff sales for July is at an all time high. And unfortunately, this is just the first year of increases with the school district. People are losing their homes, but the school board majority just doesn't care. Yes, May 24, 2010 was a sad day for Mt. Lebanon.
