Trib: Sharing parking lot in Mt. Lebanon may end holdup

An agreement to formally share a parking lot in Mt. Lebanon Park could resolve zoning problems holding up the renovation of nearby Mt. Lebanon High School, but not before the municipality and school district spent nearly $27,000 taking the zoning issues to court.

The Mt. Lebanon Board of School Directors this week approved an agreement to share the 40-space municipal parking lot off of Stadium Drive, giving the planned $113.3 million high school a total of 545 parking spaces provided the municipality approves and signs the agreement.

Elaine Labalme asked at the Commission meeting tonight what school district has a group that brings an attorney to speak for them at a Commission meeting?

That is the same school district that has a school board that sues the municipality's zoning hearing board so they can violate the municipality's zoning ordinance and then sends both sets of legal fees to the folks who elected them. See the Trib article to find the total legal bill.

John,

You forgot something. This is the same Board that called the cops to protect them from the community before they voted on these decisions.

And isn't it strange that she and others of her ilk either are oblivious to the fact, or choose to ignore the fact, that both elective bodies have solicitors sitting with them at all of their public meetings (and executive meetings) who are also on call at all other times when requested. And some elected officials, and even appointed ones, are attorneys....the Commission has two members, for instance. And public governance, be it the Muni. or District, is all about laws, regulations, rules, etc.

Why shouln't the public have legal representation in legal proceedings ? Commission and SB meetings are legal proceedings. Or maybe we're dealing with people here who believe in some form of totalitarian governance where citizens are prohibited from legal representation...a direction towards which this Republic seems to be sadly heading ?

Perhaps this woman also supported the Districts use of their solicitors to appeal the quasi-judicial decision of the Zoning Hearing Board (to uphold Muni. zoning laws) to Common Pleas Court, while at the same time was critical of a group of us retaining legal counsel to Intervene in support of the Zoning Hearing Board ?

Yes, as I look at her and listen to her dribble, I too ask the question, "I am aghast that this is my community" !

This same woman keeps saying there is no plan for $75 million, never was and never will be, and that 4000 people were misled. You're right, Dick Tracy, there is no plan for $75 million. They were all ASKING for one. Unfortunately, this is coming down to parking now, all over a sports complex and an eight lane swimming pool, which will be open for community use. This will only compound the current parking problem. As asked at the last School Board meeting, "What bonehead came up with that idea?" Probably the same bonehead who thought to put the band room over the library. It is a bad plan. A very expensive, bad plan.
I want to thank the Trib for doing some research and coming up with the total costs for the appeal, rather than just reporting what Dr. Steinhauer said at a School Board meeting, as reported in the PG.

I forgot to add this. This same group is of the belief that the project is continually being delayed throughout the process. Here is their latest post. "There was great disappointment at this additional delay in moving forward, but this is apparently standard procedure in passing an ordinance and does not reflect any attempt by the Commission to delay the project." I know that the Concerned Citizens of Mt. Lebanon are always being accused of delaying the project. The delay was when the School District decided to appeal the Zoning Hearing Board's decision. The delay was using an architect who designs plans that are not up to code. But as Ed Kubit is quick to point out now, there has been NO delay and that the project is moving right along.
