School board approves parking agreement with Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church

At its regular meeting on April 18, 2011, the Mt. Lebanon school board voted to approve a 48-month parking agreement with the Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church at 975 Washington Road. The agreement will make 127 additional parking spaces available to the school district during the high-school renovation.

In exchange for the parking spaces, the school district will pay the church $1500 per year and provide for the general maintenance of the parking lot, including salting and snow removal. The school district also agreed to reseal and re-stripe the parking lot when the agreement ends, an estimated cost of about $19 thousand.

School-board director Dan Remely said during the meeting that, compared to what others were paying for parking, the school district’s agreement was a bargain.

Two details of the agreement remain to be worked out: (1) the exact start and end dates and (2) how to handle the Lion’s Club Farmers’ Market, usually held on Wednesday evenings in the parking lot.

Lets see....127 spaces for a grand total of $1,500/year comes out to $11.81/car-year....under $1.00 per month, which is about only 2% of what the Mt. Lebanon Parking Authority rate would be for a daytime parking permit for one of their Lot spaces. Hmmm..who negotiated this for the Church ?

The Church is located on a historically significant site, and the parking lot has been the locale for The Farmers Market for several years. The Church also has a marvelous music program, which is under the direction of Dr. Kim Steinhauer, wife of school superintendent Dr. Tim.

At my high school in Alabama, there was not sufficient space to allow every kid to drive their cars. Teachers and seniors were given a parking permit. It was a lottery for the juniors.

As I didn't win the lottery, I paid a local church to park in their parking lot every day, something like $2/day. It was a private money making venture by the church.

Why not repeat that here? Have teachers get priority, use a lottery system for the students, with those not winning the lottery having to find their own way to school.

Yes, Matt has a point- the teachers need additional accomidations! Maybe the teachers should be provided with a tax-payer funded valet service to park their luxurious motor vehicles? Afterall, it is rather stressful to have to walk all the way from the parking lot to the faculty lounge, isn't it? Yes! Lets drain every drop of blood from the Lebo taxpayers- for the teachers! Yes... for the teachers!

What are you talking about? I didn't say anything about the teachers having additional accommodations other than that had priority to park near the school before the students. So should it be here as well. My point is to let the students find their own places to park or find a ride. If it works for the freshmen and sophomores...
