P-G: Mt. Lebanon man wins $68,000 on 'Jeopardy'

Mt. Lebanon resident Vito Cortese won more than $68,000 on "Jeopardy" Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week.

The 45-year-old software engineer and Italian translator is the reigning champion, but he won't be back on the show until at least Nov. 22, after the two-week Jeopardy College Championship is completed.

The Almanac: Mt. Lebanon man tests knowledge on Jeopardy!

Vito Cortese, now of Mt. Lebanon, won $5 for his efforts as a contestant on Junior High Quiz about 30 years ago when the television show was hosted by Ricki Wertz.

As for how much money he recently won as a contestant on Jeopardy! well, the South Hills will have to wait.

Cortese, 45, will make his first taped appearance on Jeopardy! Nov. 3. He can't say how long he remained on the shows taped at the end of August, or how much money he may or may not have won.

Lebo Youth Brushes Up For Jeopardy

When it comes to playing the game show "Jeopardy," it's best to brush up on your Shakespeare. Mt. Lebanon High School sophomore Christopher Weis isn't doing a whole lot of cramming in anticipation of his trip to California next month. But he did find a recent purchase at Barnes and Noble helpful: a little flow-chart of Shakespeare plots and characters.

"Hey, it works," said Christopher, who will be one of 15 contestants in the Oct. 6-7 teen tournament. It will be taped in Sony's Culver City studios. "At the auditions, there was a question about the play, 'As You Like It.' "

The chart came in handy this summer when Christopher and his family went to New York City in November for his in-person tryout. Thousands of teen-age contestants took an online test as the first step toward qualifying.
