P-G: Bids come in high for Mt. Lebanon veterans memorial

Bids for the construction of a veterans memorial in Mt. Lebanon came in substantially higher than expected today.

But the municipality is still committed to building and dedicating the memorial by Memorial Day 2012, said Dan Miller, a Mt. Lebanon commissioner who has been involved in the project.

The estimated cost of building the memorial was about $200,000, and a fund-raising drive over the last year has raised about $197,000, of which $27,000 went to fund-raising and planning costs, said Susan Morgans, the public information officer for Mt. Lebanon.

Intergenerational Games Saturday In Mt. Lebanon

Mt. Lebanon Village's Intergenerational Games are set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Lebanon Park and Tennis Center.

The village is a nonprofit established in 2009 for residents ages 50 and older to have the practical means and confidence to enjoy life and stay in their own homes. Game day is a time to meet and greet neighbors and aims to partner those older than 50 with someone younger. Activities will include a Chase Your Elders one-mile fun/walk. A warmup begins at 8:45 a.m. at the school entrance on Horsman Drive.

Mt. Lebanon Begins Its Fundraising For Veterans' Memorial

For years, Jack Haller of Mt. Lebanon has dreamed of a memorial honoring those in his community, who have made the ultimate sacrifice for America in conflicts across the world, especially former classmates of his from the Second World War.

This Thursday, July 23, that dream takes a big step toward being realized when the municipality begins raising funds to build a $154,000 memorial in Mt. Lebanon Park honoring all veterans, those who died in war as well as served in the armed forces.

Lebo Gears Up For Intergenerational Games

In Mt. Lebanon this summer, there is a new game in town.

The Mount Lebanon Village Intergenerational Games will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 in the municipal park.

Mt. Lebanon Village (MLV) is a community oriented, non-profit organization established in 2009 to give residents of the township, aged 50 and older, the practical means, confidence and peace of mind to enjoy life in their own place of residence, in the environment they value as they grow older.

Bleier Backs Vets Memorial For Mt. Lebanon

Just as he did on the football field, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rocky Bleier is giving his all to see a veterans memorial constructed in Mt. Lebanon Park.

Bleier, a longtime Mt. Lebanon resident, will lend his name and his hand to a fundraising drive to honor all who served their country in the armed services. Plans call for a public rally for the veterans memorial during Mt. Lebanon's July 4 celebration in the main park just off Morgan Drive. "Rock" has been named honorary chairman of the Veterans' Memorial Committee, and everyone who contributes will be publicly acknowledged.

Mt. Lebanon To Celebrate Earth Day

Want to learn how to plant a square foot garden? Want to try tie dying a shirt using natural local pigments? Play games and learn about the environment as more than a dozen Mt. Lebanon community groups join to celebrate Earth Day in Main Park, off Cedar Boulevard, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25. Admission is free.

"Earth Day in Mt. Lebanon will be a chance for all of us park- and tree-loving residents to get together and discover the abundant opportunities to get involved right in our own community," said Melissa Cicozi, co-chair of the Earth Day in Mt. Lebanon committee, along with Beth Hedin. "Not only will folks have a chance to become familiar with all of our green clubs and committees, but there will be lots of activities for kids and adults, including quality entertainment, Earth-friendly crafts and activities, learning opportunities, great food and even a little shopping."
