Trib: Mt. Lebanon lacrosse reaches state semifinals

Will Nabors lived for the moment, and Mt. Lebanon’s lacrosse season lives on.

The junior goalie turned away 13 shots — nine in the second half — as Mt. Lebanon hung on to beat Shady Side Academy, 8-7, in the PIAA quarterfinals Saturday at Hampton High School.

Chris O’Dell and Doran Graham each had two goals for Mt. Lebanon (16-6), which advanced to the state semifinals for the second straight year. The Blue Devils face La Salle College on Tuesday.

P-G: Defending champion Mt. Lebanon moves on to boys tennis quarterfinals

Last week, Thomas Jefferson's Keegan Shudy and Jake Mascaro narrowly missed out on a PIAA berth when they took fourth place in the WPIAL Class AA doubles tournament. Monday, Shudy and Mascaro took out their frustrations on Neshannock.

Shudy won his match at first singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Mascaro won at second singles, 7-5, 6-3. When Rit Gupta and Sam Gupta won, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, against a previously-undefeated team at first doubles, that assured a 3-2 Thomas Jefferson victory against Neshannock in a WPIAL Class AA team tournament first-round match.

"It was the best match of the year for (Shudy)," Jaguars coach Chuck Correll said. "Everything was working... Jake Mascaro played a phenomenal match."

P-G: Loss ends remarkable streak for Mt. Lebanon girls basketball team

When Mt. Lebanon High's girls basketball team lost to Oakland Catholic in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAAA girls basketball tournament, it ended a remarkable five-yer era for the Blue Devils and their coach, Dori Oldaker.

In four previous seasons, Mt. Lebanon had played in the Class AAAA state championship game, winning the title in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons against three different opponents. Only a 56-49 loss to Central Dauphin in the 2008 Class AAAA state championship spoiled a remarkable run for the Blue Devils.

Trib: Oakland Catholic knocks off defending champion Mt. Lebanon

One of the great runs in state girls basketball is over. Another of the area's great programs is enjoying its biggest win in years.

Three-time defending PIAA Class AAAA champion Mt. Lebanon saw its reign come to an end Friday night in a sloppy, 37-32 state quarterfinal loss to resilient Oakland Catholic at Chartiers Valley.

It marked quite the turnaround for the Eagles (27-2), who just two weeks earlier lost to the Blue Devils (25-4) in the WPIAL title game. Now, they're two wins away from the program's first state title since 2005 -- Tuesday's semifinal opponent Governor Mifflin is the next hurdle to cross on that quest.

Trib: Mt. Lebanon girls defeat Baldwin for third time

The third meeting between Mt. Lebanon and Baldwin wasn't a blowout like the first two, but the result was the same, as the Blue Devils earned a victory, 45-32.

Three-time defending state champion Mt. Lebanon, owner of a pair wins by 30 points or more over Section 4 rival Baldwin, outscored the Highlanders, 16-7, in the final quarter to secure a PIAA Class AAAA second-round win Tuesday evening at Palumbo Center.

P-G: PIAA Lacrosse: Mt. Lebanon loses semifinal

If only goals in the final minute or so of each half were counted, the Mt. Lebanon boys lacrosse team would have earned a spot in the state final.

But since they are not, the Blue Devils were on the wrong end of a lopsided result and saw their season end Tuesday.

Philadelphia Catholic League power St. Joseph's Prep throttled WPIAL champion Mt. Lebanon, 15-5, in a PIAA semifinal game at Penn State.

St. Joseph's Prep (19-4) advanced to play defending champion Conestoga (24-1) Saturday in the championship game.

Trib: Mt. Lebanon stomps by Sewickley Academy

Nate Relich scored five goals to lead Mt. Lebanon past Sewickley Academy, 11-5, in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Division I boys lacrosse playoffs Saturday.

Bijan Firouzan and Doran Graham scored two goals each for Mt. Lebanon (18-3), while Firouzan had four assists and Graham had one assist.

Mt. Lebanon coach Augie Garofoli is the first to admit that he does not have that one dominant tennis player on his team.

The Blue Devils won their first WPIAL title in 17 years this season by utilizing seven guys who know both their roles and how to win. But that wasn't enough in their first-ever appearance in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals Friday. They lost to District 1 runner-up Unionville, 4-1, at Hershey Racquet Club.

P-G: Chester tops Mt. Lebanon in overtime, 72-60

Underdog Mt. Lebanon had extended Chester into overtime. Then Mt. Lebanon blinked.

All of a sudden, Chester sprinted up the stairway to seven.

Mt. Lebanon put up a valiant effort against the consensus No. 1 team in the state, but Chester's minute-and-a-half spurt in overtime turned a close game into a double-digit lead and Chester went on to a 72-60 victory in the PIAA Class AAAA title game Saturday night at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center.

Third time is just as charming.

The Mt. Lebanon girls basketball team won its third consecutive PIAA Class AAAA championships with a 47-46 victory Friday night against Archbishop Carroll at Bryce Jordan Center, becoming the seventh girls team to win three titles in a row.

"They get better as they go," Mt. Lebanon senior Madison Cable said. "I love every single one of them, don't get me wrong, but this one's just different."

Trib: Mt. Lebanon prevails in overtime

Mt. Lebanon's Tyler Roth made just one field goal and scored only seven points, but that production was invaluable.

"Someone had to make a play, and I just ended up with the ball," said Roth, who made a tying 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to force overtime Wednesday night during Mt. Lebanon's 52-48 victory over Penn Wood in the PIAA Class AAAA semifinals.

Now, after a 62-35 victory over Lower Merion in the PIAA Class AAAA semifinals Tuesday at Chambersburg High School, Mt. Lebanon (24-6) has accrued enough frequent-flyer miles for a trip to Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center. That would be for at 6 p.m. Friday title game against Archbishop Carroll. And the Blue Devils would like nothing better than to earn the ultimate reward — a third consecutive state championship.

At 5 feet 5, Mt. Lebanon senior guard Anna Kestler never towers over anybody on the basketball court.

But she is a big leader for the Blue Devils.

Kestler, the starting point guard, will lead Mt. Lebanon (23-6) in a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal against Lower Merion (26-5) at 7 p.m. today in Chambersburg.

"She's a great floor general," Blue Devils coach Dori Oldaker said.

Butler’s Matt Clement dug into his big league background to explain this quarterfinal loss.

“You tip your hat to a guy when he hits a good pitch,” Clement said Saturday after Mt. Lebanon’s 51-42 victory over Butler in the PIAA Class AAAA basketball playoffs.

The major league pitcher-turned-coach would’ve tipped his hat toward Mt. Lebanon’s Luke Hagy and Evan Eaton, whose shots ended a playoff run that helped rejuvenated Butler (17-11). Eaton led with 17 points, and Hagy added two key 3-pointers that gave the Blue Devils an early lead they never lost.

Trib: Mt. Lebo exacts revenge on Shaler for WPIAL final loss

Mt. Lebanon's Anna Kestler knew her Blue Devils had left something at Palumbo Center a couple weeks ago, and they've wanted it back ever since.

They found it Friday night.

"We were coming back to get what we thought was ours," Kestler said after yesterday's lopsided 65-39 victory over Shaler in the PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinals at North Allegheny. It was Shaler that won the WPIAL title 13 days earlier, keeping Mt. Lebanon from winning a third straight league title.

Mt. Lebanon Softball Team To Play For First State Title Friday

Senior Geena Badolato pitched out of trouble in the first and seventh innings, but was in control the rest of the time while leading the Mt. Lebanon softball team to a 2-1 victory against District 1 runnerup Hatboro-Horsham in a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal today at Robb Field at Shippensburg University.

Mt. Lebanon will play for its first state title at 4 p.m. Friday at Shippensburg. The opponent will be the winner of the other semifinal tonight between District 1 champion Central Bucks South and Governor Mifflin, the runnerup from District. 3.

Mt. Lebanon Nips Shaler In PIAA Softball Quarterfinals

Tess Apke hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the fifth inning to lead Mt. Lebanon over Shaler, 1-0, in the PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinals of softball today at Fairhaven Park in Kennedy.

Mt. Lebanon (21-3), the WPIAL champion, moves to the semifinals against the winner of a later game between District 1 rivals Bishop Shanahan and Hatboro Horsham. A date and site was not immediately determined.

Mt. Lebanon Beats Central Dauphin, 58-40

Facing another talented team featuring one of the nation's best players was nothing new to Mt. Lebanon.

Heading to Penn State for another state championship game won't be, either.

Madison Cable scored 17 points as the defending champion Blue Devils used a strong finish to break open a close game and defeat Central Dauphin, 58-40, Tuesday in a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal at Hollidaysburg.
