Gatorade Likes Kate

Mt. Lebanon's Kate Begor has been named the Gatorade Pennsylvania Volleyball Player of the Year. Begor, a 5-foot-11 setter and WPIAL setter, averaged 13.5 assists per game while leading the Blue Devils (22-2) into the semifinals of the PIAA Class AAA tournament. She also had 297 digs, 242 kills, 149 blocks and 113 service aces.

Mt. Lebanon Bows Out With Loss In PIAA Volleyball

Mt. Lebanon entered the PIAA girls volleyball tournament with reason to believe it could earn a spot in Saturday's championship game at Central York High School.

The Blue Devils were unbeaten entering Friday's quarterfinals and riding a wave of momentum after winning their second Class AAA WPIAL title in three years one week earlier.

But their attempt to bring home the second state title in program history ended Saturday, as District 1 champion Bishop Shanahan defeated Mt. Lebanon in a four-set semifinal, 25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 18-25. Bishop Shanahan then won the title game, 3-0, against Allentown Central Catholic.

Mt. Lebanon Girls Reach Semifinals

Friday wasn't a banner day for WPIAL girls volleyball teams, but there are still two league champions with an opportunity to hang state title banners in their respective gyms.

Of the six area teams playing in yesterday's PIAA quarterfinals at Central York High School, only the WPIAL's Class AAA champion Mt. Lebanon and Class A title winner West Shamokin moved on to today's semifinals.

"We definitely want to represent our side of the state," Mt. Lebanon coach Dawn Begor said. "We want to show that our district is strong. We'd like to bring the championship back to the WPIAL, because it's been several years."

WPIAL Volleyball: Blue Devils Are Tops In AAA

It's one down and one to go for the Mt. Lebanon girls' volleyball team.

The Blue Devils claimed the WPIAL Class AAA title last night with a 3-2 victory against Seneca Valley in the last of three championship matches held at Chartiers Valley High School.

"We've been ranked No. 1 [in both the WPIAL and PIAA] all season," Mt. Lebanon setter Kate Begor said. "We reached one goal with today's title. We still have one more goal to reach. Hopefully, we can win the state title next week."
