The Almanac: Motorists to see more stop signs in Mt. Lebanon

Residents and motorists in Mt. Lebanon will see additional stop signs throughout the area.

At the March 13 commissioners meeting, commissioners unanimously voted to install stop signs on Jonquil Place at the intersection with Audubon Avenue, at the intersection of Coolidge Avenue and Shady Drive West and the intersection of Chalmers Place and Parkview Drive. Commissioners tabled the consideration of a stop sign replacing the yield sign at the intersection of Inglewood Drive and Beadling Road.

Mt. Lebo Residents Say Street Traffic Too Dangerous

Mt. Lebanon resident Nicole Molinaro said she hoped signs the traffic board put up on her street would warn drivers of cross traffic, but that message has apparently been lost.

Molinaro told Channel 4 Action News' Ashlie Hardway that an accident Thursday afternoon on Kenmont Avenue sent a vehicle into her yard.

Mt. Lebanon To Install Neighborhood Traffic Controls

Some Mt. Lebanon roads will be a bit quieter this summer. Commissioners voted, 5-0, last night to authorize the installation of traffic-calming devices in the notoriously busy corridor of Mapleton Avenue and surrounding streets. Drivers often use these residential roads to avoid the traffic lights along Cochran Road and Route 19, known as Washington Road in that area.

For weeks, residents have spoken at meetings in support of traffic calming. Resident Elizabeth Rangel said last night that homeowners often park on the street instead of their driveways in the daytime to discourage drivers from tearing through the neighborhood. Nonetheless, she said, she has twice had her driver's side mirror sheared off.

Other options studied earlier this winter included street closings at certain times of the day, but ultimately, it was decided that the installation of asphalt speed humps, concrete rumble strips and traffic markings would be sufficient.

The construction company of Peter J. Caruso and Sons, which submitted a bid of $11,110, was awarded the contract.

Rumble Strips Are Coming

Just a little traffic note for all of us that travel Gilkeson Road. PennDOT will be adding center line rumble strips this week to Gilkeson Road between Washington Road and Cedar Boulevard. They will also be adding them to various roads around the south hills this week as well. A full list of the roads that will be worked on can be found here.

South Hills Communities Hope To Hasten Traffic Flow

Driving through the South Hills could get easier as four communities seek money to synchronize traffic signals and relieve stop-and-go crawl along Route 19.

Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair and Peters are chipping in a combined $71,000 for the $355,000 project, seeking the rest in federal money distributed by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, said Mt. Lebanon Municipal Manager Stephen Feller.

The municipalities will contribute to the project according to how many traffic lights have to be upgraded or reprogrammed within their borders. Mt. Lebanon has budgeted $35,000; Bethel Park, $2,500; Upper St. Clair, $12,500; and Peters, $21,000.

Officials Still Working On Traffic Problems

There are very few "walking communities" left in Allegheny County. Mt. Lebanon -- with about 33,000 residents in 6 square miles -- certainly qualifies.

It has produced its share of studies on the subject of cars, people and their interactions on the roads. A 2004 Pedestrian Safety Initiative examined 42 intersections in the municipality, where improvements to certain high-traffic areas have been made in recent months.

The ward of Dan Miller, one of Mt. Lebanon's five commissioners, includes two particularly difficult areas -- Washington Road and the intersection of Cochran Road and Cedar Boulevard. A young girl was recently involved in a hit-and-run incident at the second site; she sustained minor injuries.

Traffic Woes Continue

Mt. Lebanon Commission has been toying with ideas to help traffic flow in both the business districts and in neighborhoods.

But the process is long and consensus is tough to achieve, said Commissioner Dan Miller. He has been working for some time on a traffic plan for the Mapleton/Marietta neighborhood. In fact, residents there began complaining to the municipality in February 2005 about cars speeding through and the need for something to be done.

Victim Of Hit And Run Is Doing OK

Police in Mt. Lebanon say an elementary school student was not seriously injured after being hit by an auto as she walked near Cedar Boulevard and Cochran Road.

Mt. Lebanon Deputy Chief Gene Roach said police are treating the incident as a hit and run, but said it's possible the driver did not realize he struck the child.

Section Of Bower Hill To Close For Repairs

Bower Hill Road between Mapleton Avenue and Cochran Road in Mt. Lebanon will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday because of street repair work.

The street surface will be removed on Monday and paved on Tuesday, the municipality said. Mt. Lebanon police are advising motorists to avoid that section of Bower Hill Road and find alternate routes, particularly during the morning rush hour.

Road Construction on Cochran

Traffic will be reduced to a single lane each way from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and for the next two Saturdays on Cochran Road/Route 19 in Mt. Lebanon.

A contractor will be repairing the concrete in an area where a recent water-main break occurred and weakened the highway. Drivers can expect changing traffic patterns and occasional delays.
