Trib: Garbage truck rolls down hill onto road in Mt. Lebanon

A garbage truck rolled down a hill in Mt. Lebanon and onto a busy roadway on Thursday morning when the driver could not stop it, police said.

No one was hurt in the incident that occurred about 7 a.m., when the driver of the Waste Management truck stopped on Crystal Drive and hopped out to load garbage, Mt. Lebanon police Lt. Aaron Lauth said.

Mt. Lebanon Woman Hit By SUV Dies, DUI Charges To Be Filed

A woman from Mount Lebanon has died today after she was hit by an SUV Monday afternoon.

This afternoon, Mt. Lebanon police announced that they will be filing two DUI charges against the driver of the vehicle. Police also said that additional charges could be filed at a later date, if they determine it to be necessary.

Officials said Lisa Styles, 36, was jogging with her two of her three young children in a stroller when she was hit at Beadling Road and Washington Road.

Mt. Lebo Residents Say Street Traffic Too Dangerous

Mt. Lebanon resident Nicole Molinaro said she hoped signs the traffic board put up on her street would warn drivers of cross traffic, but that message has apparently been lost.

Molinaro told Channel 4 Action News' Ashlie Hardway that an accident Thursday afternoon on Kenmont Avenue sent a vehicle into her yard.

Mt. Lebanon Police To Charge Elderly Driver

The driver police say hit a 12-year-old boy in Mt. Lebanon denies any connection to the accident. Dorothy Henninger, 77, told KDKA's Paul Martino she didn't hit the boy and if she had she would have stopped.

Mt. Lebanon police plan to file charges against her.

Vehicle Strikes 12-Year-Old Boy In Mt. Lebanon

Police are now questioning a 77-year-old woman after she allegedly struck a 12-year-old boy with her car Monday near Beverly Road and Newburn Drive in Mount Lebanon.

According to a witness, the boy was trying to cross Newburn Drive when he was hit by the car, causing him to fly through the air.

“Scrubby,” the Wild Turkey of Scrubgrass Road, Hit By Car

I never met Scrubby, but many residents knew the wild turkey fondly. The Post-Gazette reports that Scrubby was killed last Friday, presumably hit by a passing car:

So it did not come as a shock when residents near the Elm Spring and Scrubgrass Road intersection of Mt. Lebanon learned Friday that Scrubby, the caring wild turkey who often made its home near – and in – the road, was the victim of a deadly game of turkey plays chicken.

“It was not surprising, but is sad,” said Judy Campbell, a crossing guard for the school district and one of the last who saw Scrubby alive.

Fatal Mt. Lebanon Accident Under Investigation

A deadly accident is under investigation in Mt. Lebanon. Police say Jon Polcawich, Jr., 34, from Beaver, was performing private contract work in the 200 block of Colonial Drive shortly before 1 p.m. when he was hit by a contractor's truck.

Polcawich was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators say the victim may have fallen under the truck.

Crossing Guard Hit By Car Recovering

A school crossing guard struck by a motorist in Mt. Lebanon was seeing visitors from his hospital bed on June 10, said Mt. Lebanon Deputy Chief of Police Gene Roach.

Roach said he and Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Coleman McDonough visited crossing guard Salvatore Sapienza at Mercy Hospital, and that he appeared to be in good spirits. "He seemed OK, and said he'd like to go home," Roach said. "But as a precaution, there are tests they wanted to run. We're hopeful he can come home soon."

Mt. Lebanon Crossing Guard Struck By Car

A Mt. Lebanon crossing guard was struck and injured this morning at the intersection of Cedar Boulevard and Salem Drive. Mt. Lebanon police said Salvatore Sapienza, 59, of Castle Shannon, was struck at 7:47 a.m. He was taken to UPMC Mercy, and police said he was alert in the ambulance.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Mr. Sapienza was Yvonne Webster, 43, of Scott, police said. They quoted witness accounts that Ms. Webster apparently failed to see Mr. Sapienza in the intersection. Police said she would be cited.

Victim Of Hit And Run Is Doing OK

Police in Mt. Lebanon say an elementary school student was not seriously injured after being hit by an auto as she walked near Cedar Boulevard and Cochran Road.

Mt. Lebanon Deputy Chief Gene Roach said police are treating the incident as a hit and run, but said it's possible the driver did not realize he struck the child.
